Flight Safety Protocols

Last Updated: April 2026

Safety is the foundational pillar of FLIP & STEEP. All operations, training exercises, and custom builds are governed by strict adherence to local aviation regulations and our internal safety mandates.

This document outlines the standard safety operating procedures expected from all students, instructors, and clients utilizing our services.

1. Pre-Flight Procedures

  • Visual Inspection: A thorough physical inspection of the airframe, propellers, motors, and wiring must be conducted before powering on any aircraft.
  • Battery Management: LiPo batteries must be checked for correct voltage, cell balance, and physical damage (puffing/punctures) before every flight.
  • Airspace Verification: Pilots must verify they are operating in unrestricted airspace and have acquired any necessary clearances via local regulatory platforms.
  • Weather Assessment: Flights must not be conducted in high winds, precipitation, or low visibility conditions exceeding the operational limits of the specific drone.

2. In-Flight Operations

  • Line of Sight (VLOS): Unless operating under specific FPV waivers with a dedicated visual observer, pilots must maintain visual line of sight with the aircraft at all times.
  • Safe Distances: Drones must never be flown over crowds, moving vehicles, or unconsenting individuals. Maintain a minimum safe distance of 30 meters from non-participants.
  • Emergency Protocols: Pilots must be familiar with Return-to-Home (RTH) procedures, fail-safe configurations, and emergency disarm commands.

3. FPV-Specific Safety

  • Visual Observer: All FPV flights conducted during training require a dedicated visual observer to monitor the airspace for hazards and approaching aircraft.
  • Video Link Integrity: Flights must be terminated immediately if video degradation severely impacts spatial awareness.
  • Power Output: VTX (Video Transmitter) power must adhere to local radio frequency regulations to prevent interference with critical communications.

4. Training Environment Rules

When operating at the FLIP & STEEP training facility or designated flight zones:

  • Follow all instructions from the designated Range Safety Officer (RSO).
  • Propellers must remain OFF the drone during bench testing, firmware updates, and initial configuration.
  • A clear call-out of "Powering On" and "Taking Off" must be made prior to arming any drone.
